PORTSMOUTH – Chief William McQuillen reports that the Portsmouth Fire Department successfully extinguished a fire in a single-family home on Thaxter Road early Friday morning.
Crews were dispatched on Friday, June 6, at 12:48 a.m. in response to reports of smoke in a home at 218 Thaxter Road. First-arriving crews from Engine 1 and Ambulance 1 were advised prior to arrival that the house was full of smoke.
Firefighters went into action and quickly determined the fire was located in the basement. Firefighters under the direction of Assistant Chief Jason Gionet advanced into the home and began an aggressive interior attack.
Also responding were Engine 3, Ambulance 4, Ambulance 2, as well as the Fire Prevention Officer.
The fire was declared under control at 1:37 a.m., and the scene was cleared at 3:38 a.m. after extensive overhaul.
The home’s owner, the lone occupant, evacuated safely. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature and is under investigation by the Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau.
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Greenland Fire Department and Kittery, Maine, Fire Department
Chief McQuillan also wishes to offer gratitude to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department, Dover Fire Department, and Exeter Fire Department for providing station coverage and protection to Portsmouth during firefighting and overhaul efforts.
